The bpk-Bildagentur is a central media service provider of all devices of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz).
The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in Berlin is the largest cultural institution in Germany. The following five cultural institutions belong to the foundation:
- Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin
- Staatliche Museen zu Berlin
- Geheimes Staatsarchiv PK
- Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut
- Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung
Within the organization of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation the bpk-Bildagentur is a department assigned to the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. Founded in 1966 as Bildarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz, bpk-Bildagentur now offers all the services of a modern photo agency. As a publicly owned enterprise the agency is encouraged to cover all expenses through its own revenues. With an archive of over 12 million photographs the bpk-Bildagentur holds one of the most distinguished contemporary historical photo collections in Europe. For a large part of these photographs, the agency owns the exclusive rights.
The bpk-Bildagentur recently joined Photoconsortium and is also involved in the Fifties in Europe Kaleidoscope project.
