Throughout 2018, the European Year of Cultural Heritage, Europeana is running a series of collection days and events involving museums, libraries, archives and audiovisual collections across Europe, with a specific focus on the theme of origins, travels, and migration.
Next of these events will be hosted on 10-11 May in Budapest, in conjunction with the REACH Opening Conference “Resilient Cultural Heritage and Communities in Europe” and the overall leit-motiv of the REACH project, participatory approaches in culture and cultural heritage, is perfectly fitted by the Collection Day. Conference participants and citizens, young and old, are encouraged to participate in the event and to narrate their personal and family stories of travels, supported with memorabilia such as pictures, diaries, videos, letters and any other relevant object, which will be digitized and showcased in the Europeana Migration thematic collection.
“Everybody has a story to tell about their origins, and the moments that shaped their lives. We want people to share those stories and the objects that tell them, and to help us bring them together online. In that way we can celebrate the diversity and richness of the cultural heritage that is being passed on generation after generation, all over Europe” – says Harry Verwayen, the newly appointed Executive Director at Europeana.
