Do you want to know what happens behind the scenes of museums, archives and libraries? Have you ever wondered what these organizations do to share their collections with audiences? Would you like to learn how to build a strong digital community for cultural heritage?
If your answer is yes, then this MOOC is for you! In this MOOC, professionals and volunteers in cultural heritage institutions as well as teachers, students and amateurs can learn how to engage their audiences with digital cultural heritage. We will examine online repositories, cutting-edge tools and digital strategies in the field of cultural heritage. After following this MOOC, you are able to help audiences to enjoy the benefits of cultural heritage through digital practices.
We will teach you how to help users discover and engage with online collection repositories through the use case of Europeana, the digital gateway for European cultural heritage content, along with many other examples. In this course, we use examples from photography as well as dance, not only because of our expertise in both domains but also because of the range of possibilities that the topics offer for innovative user engagement strategies. Photography and dance both have interesting links to perception and memory, enabling the topics to be used to foster dialogue around cultural heritage. To allow real-life memories and perceptions to interact with photographic material, we chose a slice of recent history as our narrative focus: Europe in the 1950s. The visual image of the postwar period can teach us how photographs both reflect the reality as well as shape and influence it.
