From the curatorial effort of the EU project 1950s in Europe Kaleidoscope, every week on Friday there’s a new set of carefully selected photographs to be explored on the project’s website.
Coordinated by curator Sofie Taes and organized thanks to the powerful search and collection tools of the WITH environment that supports the project, each collection showcases pictures of the 1950s from all over Europe, sourced from Europeana and from dedicated datasets of the project partners.
The first instance of the Fifties Friday series is dedicated to the Swedish press photographer Sture Gewert, contributed to Europeana.eu by Kulturarv Västernorrland (SE). The selection allows for a taste of Sweden in the 1950s, and Gewert’s images cover a wide range of topics – from events and sports, to portraits and scenes from everyday life – and are a testimony to his outstanding photographic skills.
Explore this collection and discover Gewert’s virtuoso mastering of contrast lighting, shadows and reflections, rhythm and texture. The copyright license attached to these images allows for reuse, so don’t hesitate to get creative!
