Europeana is the European Commission’s platform for digital heritage, and works with thousands of European archives, libraries and museums to share cultural heritage for enjoyment, education and research. The Europeana website gives access to millions of photos, books, music, artworks and more – with sophisticated search and filter tools, and a wealth of online exhibitions, galleries and blogs to inform and inspire. The cultural heritage collections are shared in Europeana by trusted partners and the good quality of the data is a priority for enabling users to enjoy and possibly reuse the content in a safe enviroment.
Aggregators like Photoconsortium support data partner in sharing their content in Europeana at its best, increasing the visibility of their cultural collections online, and collaborate with Europeana Foundation to showcase these collections and explore possibilities of reuse. Nice examples and best practice for non commercial reuse of content available in Europeana are offered in the context of Europeana Education community and tools, also showcased in the Photoconsortium Educational Portal.
Supporting content holders in offering their collection to Europeana in the most appealing way possible, and according to the institutions’ sharing models and practice, is the core mission of Photoconsortium, together with providing support about publishing and technical requirements. Last but not least, high quality data allowing for some reuse are at the core of EU-financed projects that Photoconsortium and its members participate in.
