The rapidly evolving field of AI-powered image processing tools have revolutionized digital media content. These tools allow us to denoise images, enhance resolution, and even colorize black-and-white photos, opening exciting new possibilities. However, the same underlying technology also made it easier to generate artificial content or manipulate existing media, raising serious concerns about the trustworthiness of what we see. As the line between genuine and altered content blurs, the importance of transparency in digital media provenance has never been greater, particularly in the context of preserving our cultural heritage through digitization. This webinar explores the latest advancements in provenance signalling and best practices for ensuring media authenticity and transparency.
Keynote Speaker: Frederik Temmermans, Multimedia interoperability researcher at Vrije Universiteit Brussel-imec. JPEG committee member.
His research focuses on image processing, interoperable access to image data and media privacy, security, authenticity and integrity. He has been involved in various research projects in the medical, mobile and cultural domains. Frederik is an active member of the JPEG standardisation committee (ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG1) where he contributed to several standards including JPSearch (ISO/IEC 24800), the JPEG Universal Metadata Box Format (ISO/IEC 19566-5) and JPEG Privacy and Security (ISO/IEC 19566-4) and currently chairs activities on JPEG Fake Media and Non-Fubgable Tokens (NFTs). Frederik is also co-founder of the VUB spin-off company Universum Digitalis, and is a founder member of PHOTOCONSORTIUM and part of the Association’s Steering Committee.
“International standards to securely signal media provenance information will play a key role as a long-term sustainable approach to assess authenticity of media assets and as such help in the fight against fake news.”
This webinar is part of a series developed in collaboration with ICA International Council on Archives, in the framework of EUreka3D project Capacity Building Programme, which provides online and onsite training to CHIs for high-quality standards of digitisation, advanced metadata management and aggregation to Europeana, enriching the common European data space for cultural heritage.
