From the curatorial effort of the EU project 1950s in Europe Kaleidoscope, every week on Friday there’s a new set of carefully selected photographs to be explored on the project’s website.
Today we present “Barnens Dag”.
While all around the world specific celebrations honoring the child and childhood take place, the date of festivities varies across different countries. In Japan, for instance, 5 May is the big day, while Switzerland has its children day allocated to 20 November. In Sweden, where this series of images stem from, ‘Barnens Dag’ takes place yearly on 13 May. Originated as a range of activities organized to generate funds for colonies providing summer holidays for poor children, today the local committees are connected via a dedicated association and the term ‘Barnens Dag’ is copyright-protected. Our selection dates from the 1950s, and was provided by Örebro läns museum to europeana.eu under an open license. The festive dresses, giant swans, exciting games and lavish parades certainly make for a party to remember!
