From the curatorial effort of the EU project 1950s in Europe Kaleidoscope, every week on Friday there’s a new set of carefully selected photographs to be explored on the project’s website.
Today we present “Sheep shearing for connoisseurs (1954)”.
Every year on the second Saturday of June the sheep herds of Ede – a medium-sized municipality in the Dutch province of Gelderland – organize a sheep shearing party. The fifties is the decade in which this tradition (still alive today) was born. The festive event usually starts in the morning with the shearing of the sheep using hand shears. Afterwards, visitors can enjoy a bird of prey show, singing and dancing performances, art exhibits, local products and delicious treats such as smoked trout, traditional sausage and Dutch syrup waffles.
