From the curatorial effort of the EU project 1950s in Europe Kaleidoscope, every week on Friday there’s a new set of carefully selected photographs to be explored on the project’s website.
Today we present “H55: Helsingborg world exhibition”.
This picture series created by Lindberg Foto and added to Europeana.eu by Kulturmagasinet – Helsingborgs museer (SE) documents the Helsingborg world’s fair held in the summer of 1955. At H55 Denmark, Finland, France, Japan, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and West Germany, presented their finest arts and crafts themed around ‘The modern man in the environment’. Dealing with consumer and household goods, work and relaxation, H55 focused on modern design and its potential for use in commercial and luxury products. Demonstrating how simplicity, practicality and beauty are not only complementary but also compatible, H55 was rooted in and illustrative of post-war modernity and optimism.
