For a project that many would perhaps consider “brave” at the least, photographer Robert Shults spent about one year at the 26-acre Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State University (FACTS), the world’s largest outdoor human decomposition laboratory, where human decomposition is studied through donated cadavers.

Scientists and researchers in this facility analyze the various phases of outdoor body decomposition in order to develop investigation techniques and acquire data which can help identification and analysis of victims, to support forensic and investigatory procedures.

The photographs portray the daily research of these very special teams of undergraduate and graduate students who work for understanding all stages and conditions of mortal decay, by studying donors’ bodies returning to the earth.
