A more diversified blend of cultures than that of London is hardly imaginable. As one of the most diverse cities in the world, London counts about 40% of immigrated inhabitants, speaking a total of 300 languages. A substantial influx of Caribbean immigrants was noted in 1948, after the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush: a troopship that carried over 1.000 passengers from Jamaica. Melvina Stevens left Kingston for London in the mid-1950s. Her curiosity for the British capital and its famous sights and monuments, was spurred by princess Margaret: the royal who had been on a tour of the West-Indies in 1954. Having cooked for her at a banquet during this visit, Melvina decided to cross the ocean and go discover the princess’s home country for herself. She is known to have visited London hotspots such as Clarence House and Buckingham Palace, and is photographed here while working at a cafe in Worthing, Sussex.
